I will promise to love you less

I will promise to love you less,
I almost feel it now;
The lighter weight upon my chest,
The unknitting of my brow.

I will promise to love you less,
Leave things as they be;
The aching that will be repressed,
The muted ecstasy.

I will promise to love you less,
For your sake and for mine;
To walk away from what is left,
A trail of hopes behind.

But I cannot promise to love you not —

I remember… you forgot.
